Rock climbing is certainly a luxury pursuit. By this I mean to say that climbing is done for selfish reasons, and in the end contributes very little to the well being of the earth and the many who suffer. At the same time, to climb rocks does usually bring a certain amount of suffering to the climber, but this suffering is generously balanced by a sense of accomplishment, a sense of oneness with the environment and the realization that so many of the luxuries that have become necessities in our society are not needed to appreciate the world around us, and in fact obscure what is truly magnificent in living.
